Miss Merlyn’s Day-to-Night Swirl BY JENN WEBSTER
It was almost dawn, and Miss Merlyn, a mermaid with magic powers, swam up to the surface to take a look at the morning sun that was about to rise; she perched up on a rock, as she had always done, and then watched as the sky slowly changed from night into day.
At first, Miss Merlyn had been hoping for the sun to come up as fast as possible, but somehow, the sun began to come up slowly, but as slower as usual. Miss Merlyn began to think that Maybe I could make that sun go back to going up as usual… however, one would think that it would be wrong for anyone to make the sun go up usually every day. Still, for a mermaid with magic powers like Miss Merlyn, then that might be possible!
So with that, Miss Merlyn decided to use her powers to try to make the sun go up just the way that she wanted to, in the order that she wanted to, in the slow-fast order! She waved her hands to activate her magic, but after she had done so, something strange had happened-Both day and night had swirled together!
Miss Merlyn was shocked, as well as surprised! She had never seen anything like this! Both night and day-In a swirl! Miss Merlyn looked at that strange sky and knew she had done something wrong! She tried to use her magic to reverse something as odd as this but could not!
Just then, a spirit appeared to Miss Merlyn; Miss Merlyn asked, “Who are you?” and the spirit replied, “I am the Spirit of The Skies…I see that you are trying to reverse something that you did, hmm?” Miss Merlyn replied, “Yes, I had tried to use my magic to make the sun go up a little faster, but all of a sudden, night and day were mixed in a swirl! I tried to reverse it, but I can’t! Oh, what am I going to do?!”
The Spirit of The Skies then told Miss Merlyn, “Well, that means that you have been trying to do something right in terms of nature, but somehow something went wrong…So I will help you make something right out of something wrong. However, remember that the sun always rises whether things go wrong or not.”
Then, the Spirit of The Skies asked Miss Merlyn, “Now, I am going to help you make the skies back into what they were before. Could you follow me, Miss Merlyn? Are you ready?” “Yes,” Miss Merlyn replied, and then The Spirit of The Skies said to her, “Then follow what I do.” And so, both Miss Merlyn and the Spirit activate the powers by raising their arms and making the skies become unswirled, and then the skies were back to what they were before- the dawning sky, awaiting the sun.
Then Miss Merlyn sat back on the rock, watched the sunrise…and smiled.
